Newcastle United marginally edged Southampton to retain the invincible status
Newcastle United narrowly edged Southampton United at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Thursday evening to take their Premier League unbeaten run to nine. The Magpies were quick to display their envisaged class after finding themselves trailing the home side in just 25′ through a Stuart Armstrong finish.
No longer than the home side took the lead that the Magpies drew level through a decisive effort from Christopher Grant Wood in the 32′ before Bruno Guimaraes Rodriguez Moura sealed the win for the away side in the 52′. The stunning finish of the Brazilian attacker extended the revival of the Magpies. The match ended 1:2 in favour of Newcastle.
Where Newcastle United stands
After the turn of the season in January, the Magpies have shown the type of class they expect to find themselves in season to come by sharing the spoil with Manchester United at St. James Park. The last time they lost a match was on the 19th of December, 2021. The heavy lost to Manchester City was the last time they ever got defeated by Premier League side till now.
The Magpies, although, rated as the richest football club on earth, got schooled by the league leaders. The result had already given way to predictions of outright lost to Manchester United in the next league fixture. Surprisingly, the lost to the City side has been the last so far. The match between Manchester United and Newcastle United ended in a one all draw.
6/7 Result: Only one team has done that so far
So far, as long as English Premier League is concerned, Newcastle United have won more games in the last 7 games than any other team. Their revival has seen them sky rocket to 14th position on the log after being previously tipped for relegation as they were rock bottom of the league. Only Liverpool has had a better form in the EPL in the last 7 matches.
What is the next thing?
Newcastle has since been taking each game at a time and it has been of immense benefit to them. Newcastle United has become a team to beat after the turn of the 2021/2022 season. However, the club has refused to be overambitious by failing to make its expectations in the current season known to anyone. One thing that is certain is that, VAR247 gathered with the cash to splash around, the Magpies may be a strong contender for the title in the season to come, at worst, a top four finish will be their position.
We must note that the signings by the coach Eddie Howe are not the best that the club can afford. One thing is certain, the synergy and fluidity of play among the players have seen them upturn what would have been a nightmare season.
Taking one game at a time, Newcastle United will be facing the Chelsea FC in the next fixture of the Premier League. Their last meeting in the league saw the Magpies pounced by the Blues side. The match ended 0-3 in favour of Chelsea, with Reece James bagging a brace and Jorginho rounding it off with a closing time penalty. Newcastle will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 10 to equal their 1996/1997 run.
